Fertilizer/pesticides #869145

Asked May 19, 2024, 5:48 PM EDT

I have bought what landscapers have called the worst tree possible. The Leyland cypress. That being said, I have 40 of them, mostly healthy and big so far. I would like to keep them as long as possible, as they are perfect as a windbreak and privacy screen. Would it be worth the time and money to start adding fertilizer and/or pesticides? If so, what would you suggest? I know you're thinking cut them down, that costs about 4k. I'm retired and pretty broke.

Expert Response

Terri,

Adding a 10-10-10 fertilizer would be fine to use. If you see bugs on the trees a pesticide would be called for to use on the trees. But that is another topic. Pests on Leylan Cypress are bagworms, spider mites, and scale. Bagworms should be removed from the trees and thrown in a bucket of water. Scale can be treated with a fungicide.
