We have metal containers ( 8’ x 2’ x 17”high) in which we will be planting herbs and perhaps a tomato plant if we have space. After reading about different materials to put in bottom we thought we should check with the experts! Suggestions have been cardboard, newspapers (no color), mulch, landscape cloth, rocks. What do you think would be best for our plants? Thank you.

Expert Response
If your raised bed will have a metal bottom, it would be good to have a bottom layer that allows moisture to settle. This could include gravel, pine needles, mulch, or landscape fabric. Good luck with your project.
