Grass dead in spotty areas. #868780

Hello,
We live up north and have put new soil and seed down for three years. We keep getting patchy areas with dead grass in the spring. Each spring I decide to give it my best shot again and rake / scrape the old dead grass out, put new dirt down and add good quality seed. Same thing this year, patches of dead grass. Help! I am thinking there is something wrong with the soil. What could it be? Fungus, mold, too wet, pine needles cause too much acid, too much shade?

Expert Response
Hi Ed and Maureen,
The first thing I was going to ask was if you have tested your soil. Here is a link to the U of M soil testing site: https://soiltest.cfans.umn.edu/. I think you need to get the test results before spending more time and money on this problem.
Does the grass grow when you rake, re-soil, and seed? Same dead patches or new ones?
Do the soil test and then reach back out to us for the next steps.
Thanks for asking Ask Extension.
