Trimming Boxwoods #868141

Asked May 13, 2024, 7:00 AM EDT

When is the best time of the year to trim boxwoods? I have an Green Mountain Boxwood that I want to trim so that it is cone shaped. I'm in zone 7B.

Expert Response

Boxwood can be pruned now if you want, or just about any time that isn't late summer into autumn; the ideal time is probably late winter or early spring, so new growth covers-up the pruning cuts quickly (just for aesthetics). Trim lightly, only as much as needed to generate the shape you want, as heavy pruning and especially shearing can make the shrubs more vulnerable to pest and disease issues.
