potatoes #867963

Asked May 11, 2024, 6:43 AM EDT

I have a question about potatoes growing in containers. I planted the correct amount of seedlings (1 per 5 gallon in a 20 or 25 gallon container, I have both). They are growing like mad. But now the containers are full to the brim after hilling, and there is already 18" of new growth on top. Should I let the potatoes grow and stop hilling? Or should I try to enlarge the sides of the pots and keep hilling? T hanks.

Expert Response

Potatoes are so fun this time of year...  the higher you mound the soil the more potoates will be made.   I would not recommend trying to extend the container though.   Let the potatoes complete their life cycle and maybe plant again for the fall season.

Please reach out with questions.  Good luck!
Thank you! Can I continue to  cover the leaves and just leave 6” visible?

Yes... the more of the "stem area" that you continue to cover the more potato tubers that can grow.
