Lilacs not blooming #867747

Asked May 09, 2024, 1:28 PM EDT

Two years ago, I did a hard pruning of my lilacs. This year, the bushes look full and very healthy but they aren’t blooming. Will the flowers ever come back?

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Yes, pruning other than right after they bloom cuts off the next year’s flower-buds. The second year may be due to the drought and soil conditions. Conversely overwatering can negatively effect lilacs.  Also if you over fertilized last year that can contribute to green growth versus flowering. Finally lilacs don’t do well in shaded areas.
