What's my soil type? #867624

Asked May 08, 2024, 4:34 PM EDT

I was just told that soil type for many native plants is determined by the type of soil at a considerable depth. I live in Minneapolis in the 2900 block of Polk St. NE. Is there a way I can find out what my soil type is likely to be?

Expert Response

Soil type is something that you can determine yourself. Below are links that can help you including having your soil tested at the U of M.

You can also do a simple test by picking up some of your dry soil in your hand and compacting it. If it holds together it has a lot of clay, if you can’t make a ball with it, it is sandy soil. Loamy soil, which is the best, will compact a little but then fall apart.

In NE Minneapolis you likely have clay soil. You can amend with by adding compost and growing cover crops.

For your lawn, you can try having it aerated in the fall every couple of years.
