Protecting Tulips from animals #865788

Asked April 24, 2024, 6:01 PM EDT

Hello -for the second year in a row I have gone out to my tulips and found them clipped neatly just under the flowering part. I believe it is the deer but I have not seen them and I had applied the liquid Fence to no avail. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

If you have a deer problem there is little that can be applied to keep them from eating tulips just as they bloom which they consider a dessert bar. Things you can try.
1. Plant other bulbs around & among the tulips that deer don't like such as: Narcissus (make sure they are ones that bloom the same time as the tulips you plant), Allium, Hyacinth (the fragrant kind), mint type flowering plants - Catmint, Agastache, they also serve to hide the fading foliage.
2. Plant them around Hellebore - you get the advantage of a winter bloomer, deer resistant, evergreen leaf and it hides the fading bulb foliage, needs part shade
3. Try species tulips from Turkey versus the Darwin type .
4. Go to a hair salon and get a bag of hair clippings and liberally apply them around your garden. You can hang the hair in net bags right next to the tulips at the same height.  Dog hair works even better but it smells when wet.

In my last home I had a herd of 10-15 that visited every morning and no matter what I sprayed or used, I never saw a single tulip come to full bloom until I started interplanting with other bulbs and plants.  Even then I only got about 25% bloom.  I finally started planting other things.

Judy,

Thank you - I planted 150 Tulip Bulbs in one planter fashioned out of railroad ties and 150 Daffodils in a similar planter right next to it. It is frustrating to see all the Daffodils come up and stay up and to see the tulips do a 2 week run. But you have given me a few more options -Thank you!
