Best Trees to plant between sidewalk and street #865461
Asked April 22, 2024, 3:01 PM EDT
Hello. My neighborhood (in Broomfield, CO) requires us to plant trees in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. The builder of our neighborhood planted honeylocust trees but one of them has died (it looks like they did not unpack the root ball when planting). I need to replace this tree but wanted to plant something that 1) will thrive in the space provided and 2) wont result in a torn up sidewalk 10 years from now.
A little bit about the space...the strip of grass between the sidewalk and street is about 4 feet wide. Because there is grass there, it will be getting watered multiple times per week. I do have a maple tree (perhaps autumn blaze?) planted about 30 feet from where this tree will be planted.
Any recommendations you could provide would be greatly appreciated

Good morning Steve
Thank you for sending your question to the Master Gardeners.
I have included a link to an useful article from the CSU Extension website, FrontRange Tree Recommendation List.

This list will give you information to help you pick the right tree for the strip along your sidewalk. You want to select a Honey Locust tree to match the surviving one. Remember that roots from any tree may interfere with sidewalks after several years as the roots for all trees grow parallel to the surface of the ground and concrete.
