Best plants or shrubs along a driveway #863589

Asked April 06, 2024, 10:36 PM EDT

I have a 6' wide strip between my driveway and neighbors yard. Full sun. Do you have a recommendation for what to plant there? Shrubs? Native prairie plants?

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

If this were my driveway I would not plant shrubs.  Remember you have to remove snow and would have a constant snow block with shrubs.  The exception would be if you could move the shrubs away from the driveway.

You could plant things like tulips, daffodils for early spring and then add annuals such as petunias, marigolds, or even some annual grasses.

If you want perennials things such as Stella d’oro day lilies would be great.  You could also plant grasses. Anything that gets cut back to the ground for snow removal purposes.

Even if you go with perennials, you could add annuals for more color.

I would suggest going to a garden center and look at the sun plants, both annual and perennial and read the tags.

Mulching your plants will also help with moisture retention and weeds.

Another reason I use annuals is because snow pack for the winter could possibly hinder perennials.

I hope this helps some.
