Brown rosemary leaves #863583

Asked April 06, 2024, 7:29 PM EDT

My rosemary leaves are turning brown. I noticed it last winter and thought maybe the soil was too wet for it so I moved it to a clay pot last spring so the soil can drain better but the plant has only gotten worse. I think I’ll have to replace it but would like to understand what’s wrong before buying another plant. Is it too wet or is something else going on?

Expert Response

Rosemary can be killed back by extreme cold. If it was in a pot outdoors, that is most likely the problem. It may send out new shoots this year. If replacing, use a variety known to be freeze resistant or plan on bringing in the pot for the winter. Like most Mediterranean plants it does not tolerate soggy soil.
