Effect of diluted bleach on new plants #863065

Asked April 01, 2024, 7:16 PM EDT

We live in a condo and had our balcony power washed by a licensed company using a spray of 4 to 1 diluted bleach solution on moss before power washing with clear water. We were told this was biodegradable and safe. It happened that the condo was installing new plants directly below our balcony and the condo board is now concerned that the plants have been damaged by the bleach solution. Is there reason for concern?

Expert Response

The new plants should be fine. Only short-term foliage damage is likely and they may not be affected at all. Bleach doesn't keep working once in contact with organic matter and why it is only useful as a sterilizer once the surface is clean of dirt.

If any leaves were "burnt" by bleach exposure they'll just get covered-up with new growth soon. Any will help wash of residual amounts as well and you mentioned they rinsed with clean water after cleaning anyways.

Let us know if you have further questions as the growing season progresses and feel free to send photos of plants should they arise.
