I'm thinking about planting a vine that I could train up the sides of a pergola, to cover the top and offer more shade in summer. I wanted something that would grow quickly and provide shade during the hot summer months, but would let more sunlight through in winter.
What types of vines would work well for this purpose?

I am including a Plant Talk with several suggestions (below). Honeysuckle, grapes, trumpet vines and clematis are all good choices. One that may suit the bill is Silver Lace Vine. It grows fast, it pretty tough (so can handle rough handling and cutting back) and has lovely white flowers throughout the summer.
Things to consider: Japanese Beetles like grapes and Silver Lace Vine (along with most everything else!), aphids like certain clematis and honeysuckles, and blister beetles are attracted to certain clematis. Trumpet Vine can be a brute under certain conditions. A good nursery should have someone on hand who can answer such questions about specific varieties that they carry.
