Thank you for contacting Ask Extension! Deer-resistant annuals and perennials can be a great addition to your garden, especially if you live in an area with a high deer population. While there is no such thing as a deer-proof plant, there are several plants that deer tend to avoid or find less palatable. For example, ornamental grasses and sedges are great choices for gardens in deer-populated areas as deer are browsers, not grazers. Additionally, herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, and Mexican mint marigold are all reported to be deer-resistant due to their strong aromas.

In terms of perennials, some plants that are generally less favored by deer include cotoneaster, boxwood, pyracantha, oleander, Cherokee rose, Lady Bank’s rose, and hypericum. Daffodils are also less likely to be eaten by deer, although they may take a bite before spitting them out. Geraniums, hypericum (St. John's Wort), roses, Lamb's ear, Penstemons, Sages and grasses/sedges are good choices for hot, dry areas.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of these plants can vary depending on the local deer population, the availability of other food sources, and the time of year. Keep in mind that many plants that are deer-resistant are usually highly fragrant plants, plants that have texture or are spiny or coarse, such as geraniums or roses. If there are some plants that you would like to put into your area that are not deer resistant, surround them with plants that are fragrant/ or have texture, and that can keep deer at bay. Remember that deer will always eat things if they are hungry enough. When choosing plants, also select plants according to the amount of sun/shade they receive, and how wet/dry the area is. This will ensure your success.
