Expert Response

Dear Lori,

Oh no, I am sorry to read about your mole problem. I would recommend reading the UMN Extension's article about getting rid of moles in your yard: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-trap-moles

With pets, trapping moles is often recommended over using toxicants. There are below-ground traps that are quite effective and easy to set. Make sure to "walk down" any raised tunnels before you begin so you can see where the moles are active. Be aware that these traps are not for the meek. One advantage of this method is that you know if the trap is successful (i.e., there is a 'body' of evidence). You can keep pets away from a set trap by covering it with a bucket held in place by a brick on top.

Good luck!

This is great info. What kind of trap do you think works the best? I red the link you sent and looked online for traps and there are so many.
thank you,
L!

Dear Lori,

Absolutely! The harpoon-style trap is the easiest to set and available at most stores. We cannot recommend a specific brand, but if you google "harpoon mole trap", you will find multiple options.

Thank you!
