peach tree varieties and pollination #858468

Asked February 04, 2024, 2:31 PM EST

I am planning on starting a small orchard of six peach trees. For proper pollination to occur, do I need to plant all the same variety of tree? Or, should I plant multiple varieties? Will planting multiple varieties (i.e. two of each) cause a cross breeding of varieties? And is there a list of varieties that produce the highest yield in bushels per year in central Oklahoma?

Expert Response

Peaches can be difficult to grow in Oklahoma due to late spring freezes and pest problems. Proper cultivar selection and care will help reduce those issues. Peaches are generally self-fertile and do not require cross-pollination. Here are a couple of fact sheets that will be helpful - Planting and Early Care of the Peach Orchard and Apple and Peach Varieties for Oklahoma.
