Effect of Copper on plants #858422

Asked February 03, 2024, 4:30 PM EST

We have planted a weeping redbud tree at our church in memory of my late sister. We would like to put a small marker nearby with "In Memory of...." It would be roughly 9 x 5 inches.. One option we are considering is a copper sign, but are worried that runoff from the copper could adversely affect the growth of the tree. We don't know whether the amount of copper in the soil would increase over time, or be diluted and wash away. We would appreciate any advice you can give us. Thank you.

Hi Nell,
I'm sorry for your loss.
This is a good question! And I did a bit of research and found a copper sign/plaque will not leach enough copper to even slightly affect the tree or it's roots. Folklore tells us a copper nail will kill a tree, which is true for a very small tree and likely multiple copper nails. A copper sign next to a tree is much different, and will not cause an issue.
The tree looks beautiful, and will be for many years to come.
Take care,
-Julie
