Luna moth host plants #858080

Asked January 29, 2024, 6:51 PM EST

Hello, We saw hazelnuts listed as a host for luna moths in a nursery catalog, but we haven’t seen them listed as a host species anywhere else. Do you know if luna moths like hazelnuts or if there are other shrubbier luna moth host plants native to Michigan we could plant to attract them? Thank you! Rachael and Ben

Expert Response

Hickory, walnut, sweetgum, maple, oak, willow and sumac are other plants that are hosts for luna moth. As a species that lives in deciduous forests, there are likely other plants that support the adults and egg laying though they grow more tree-like.
