successful alternative to seed-starting mix containing peat moss? #856322

Asked December 12, 2023, 5:46 PM EST

I'm looking for a peat-free seed-starting mix that has some evidence of success behind it. Do you have any suggestions for a successful mix I can prepare myself and a ready-made mix I can buy? I see suggestions online, but they sound kind of theoretical (although Joe Lamp'l, host of Growing a Greener World, ran an online video about some trials he's doing with various peat-free seed-starting mixes, and at the time of the video, he was finding Pittmoss' "Plentiful" mix to be promising).

Hi,

You can explore our blog post on Peat-free potting mixes for reference. There are products labeled with 'peat-free' you can look for. You can search at organic markets or smaller/higher end garden centers for some as well. For example there is one called Organic Mechanics that comes out of Pennsylvania that you should be able to find locally that has a good mix that is peat-free. The potting mix is fine to use as seed starting mix as well and there has been some success with that. We don't have experience with the 'Pittmoss' brand but have heard that some gardeners do like it.

You can also try to mix your own using coconut coir and compost. It depends on the size of the seeds you are starting. Something small you will probably need more compost than the coir and if it is a larger seed you might be able to use straight coir.

It will take a little bit of experimentation to see which you like to use as a replacement and what seems to work for the type of seed you are using.

If you have success with something you like, we'd love to hear feedback!
