Hello Folks, There is a Giant Sequoia tree near our house. It's about 5' in diameter, about 75' tall and about 20' from our house. It's a simple 1960s house with a few cracks in the drywall and door jams moving a bit each year - I'm used to that. However this year there are many new cracks, many doors won't latch and some latches have moved nearly 1/4". You get the idea. So, my questions, knowing that the Sequoia roots go quite far and are shallow (6-10' deep max is my impression). Do their roots grow a bit down and then turn up to the surface? I'm tempted to dig about 3 - 4' deep, 15 feet from the trunk of the tree the width of our house (25') to sever any roots and relieve pressure on the foundation. Would less deep than that stop roots from pushing up the foundation? I know you can't examine the foundation but ...... would cutting those roots dramatically harm the tree? There is only one small Cedar (1.5' diameter, 30' tall) near the Sequoia (10' away) and I understand that Sequoia intertwine their roots with other trees. I'm in Eugene 2 blocks away from decent sized hills, clay soil and the tree seems in decent shape (not too dry soil or leaves). Thanks for considering my questions. An Oregonian
