Watering frequency will depend on how often the root ball is drying out. While it can help to use a schedule to remember to check on the plants, it's unlikely a plant would need water on such a set schedule. Feeling the soil about six inches deep is the usually best way to judge water needs; we haven't done research on the accuracy of water meter tools. If the soil at that depth feels damp to the touch then the plant likely doesn't need watering. If somewhat dry to the touch, then watering is probably needed. You can more-or-less stop monitoring them when the ground freezes, but bear in mind that evergreens are more vulnerable to winter desiccation than deciduous species. If we have mild spells during winter with no substantial precipitation, they will probably need watering periodically. In spring, begin more regular monitoring when the ground remains thawed.
