disposal of hazardous chemical #854859

Asked November 07, 2023, 9:51 AM EST

The previous owners of my house left a bag of chlordane behind. I want to get rid of it safely--can you tell me how to do that, or where I might find that information?

Lucas County Ohio

Expert Response

Hello Linda,
Many municipalities offer recycling centers where hazardous materials can be brought for disposal.  Chlordane has significant consequences and can persist a very long time in the environment if disposed of improperly, so please seek out one of these.
You did not say where you live, but here in Columbus we have the SWACO Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, 645 East 8th Avenue, Columbus 43201.    I have personally been to this facility and disposed of pesticides, so I recommend this site.  However, if you are in another city, contact your local environmental health or solid waste agency, or try searching on the Earth 911 database for something closer to you:  earth911.com.   I entered "pesticides" and my zip code and was able to pull up our SWACO facility in the earth 911 database.  If you are not having success you can call our office for some assistance.   <personal data hidden>.

Thank you so much!  I live in Holland, OH and I found a County Hazardous Waste facility that will take the chlordane.  That’s a load off my mind!
