Thanks for your question.
I would be hesitant in planting grass seed at this late date (October 3, 2023). Although fescue is an excellent choice of seed, it would take a week to 10 days for it to germinate. That would put you into mid-October. Then it would take at least another couple of weeks for a good root system to be established. The forecast for the Metro Area for next week is night temperatures in the low 40’s and high 30’s. Over the years in the Metro Area, the first frost occurs sometime before mid-October. None of this portends well for the germination and growing of grass. Let me make three suggestions:
1). If you have not done so within the last three years, have your yard aerated this fall. It is the ideal time to do so.
2). Instead of trying to grow grass at this immediate time, consider doing a dormant seeding. This could be done in early November after a couple of light frosts. Essentially it consists of putting grass seed on the ground when air temperatures would not allow for its germination. This would be delayed until spring 2024.
3). Do just the aeration this fall and then in early May of 2024, do your grass seeding.
