Hello,
The plant you are referring to is called GUARA. and. yes, the bees do love them!
You can start gaura from seed in cell flats indoors or direct seed them in the garden.
The seeds need light to germinate so do not cover them. Germination at is ideally at 70 degrees F and will take 21 to 35 days, so if you are direct sowing them into the soil, do not plant them until the temperature has warmed up. But first, mix the seed with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting- this is called stratification - and helps the seeds to germinate. For best results, sow seeds in. flat or individual peat pots and keep the soil lightly joist at 70' until germination. Once they have established their second set of leaves you can plant them outside.
You can also sow the seeds in late fall, planting just barely below the surface of the soil. (which seems so much easier!)
The article below gives lots of good information on this beautiful plant. It is not always hearty every single year in Michigan, and may need to be replanted from time to time, unless of course you get lucky and conditions are right for the seeds that drop from the plant to self sow and come up again.
