Quick growing shrubs/bushes that will thrive in full sun at 9,300 feet among sagebrush #851793

Hi, we have a cabin in Arrowhead that is in an open area surrounded by sagebrush. We are on a dusty major filing road in the community and are wanting to plant something that will grow quickly that will act as a dust barrier and help provide privacy. I wanted to plant Rocky Mountain Junipers because they are hardy and quick growing. Our forest manager doesn't like this choice because it is not native to the area and the needles tend to light up quickly if we have a fire. He suggested currant or bush huckleberry as an alternative. In doing research it doesn't appear these plants would be large and thick enough to act as a dust barrier. I would like your opinion if this is a good selection and if not, what would you suggest. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Barbara,

We have a couple options for native plants that I would recommend. One extremely hardy bush is a Serviceberry shrub - they do get a little taller when mature - between 6 - 10 feet tall. You can typically buy them in Gunnison at any of the plant shops. I also would recommend Western Chokecherries. I am attaching a fact sheet from CSU that has many different of varieties of native shrubs that I think might fit your needs!
