Green-headed beetle #850421

Asked September 18, 2023, 5:47 PM EDT

Hello, I am hoping you can help identify what appears to be a green-headed beetle in the attached photo.I found it on the entry mat to our back patio door yesterday. It was about half an inch long and this morning it was gone. We live in Washington County and I initially thought it might be an Emerald Ash Borer but it looks too small for that and only the head is bright green. Your help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for keeping an eye out for emerald ash borers! Luckily this is a beautiful native species called Buprestis viridisuturalis and is not an emerald ash borer.

The color and patterning of Buprestis viridisuturalis adults can be a little variable, but here is a link to a photo of one that looks pretty similar to the one you saw...

Buprestis viridisuturalis is not a pest. Its larvae live in and feed on the wood of injured, dying or recently dead alders, cottonwoods, aspens and poplars.
Hope that helps!
