Evergreens non-toxic to horses #844365

Asked August 06, 2023, 12:24 PM EDT

Hi, I would like to plant 3 evergreens as a privacy screen in my pasture. Local nursery suggested juniper and I read the berries are toxic to horses, yet this particular juniper does not have berries. I can find lists of trees and shrubs that are safe for horses but nothing about evergreens. Hoping you can help me find a safe evergreen to plant or at least some suggestions. I'm at about 7400 feet elevation. THANK YOU!!!

Expert Response

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting the Colorado State University Lawn and Garden Help Desk with your questions about Evergreens that are non-toxic to horses. I hope we are able to assist you in determining which Evergreen is going to provide the most privacy and that is not toxic for your horses!

In the article below, they discuss multiple plants that can provide privacy for your home, that will not harm your horses. I picked out a specific part of the article and attached it below, that states which Junipers you can plant that are also safe for your horses.

Appearance, functionality and animal safety are important factors for horse owners to consider as they change the trees and other plants in an equine’s environment.

“Property owners with horses might want to consider one of the improved, upright junipers such as Spartan or Taylor.”

I hope this resource is helpful in assisting you with determining which Evergreen is best for your landscape, and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to reach back out to the Colorado State University Lawn and Garden Help Desk. I appreciate your question and wish you the best of luck!

Happy Gardening!
