Carpet beetles control #843883

Asked August 02, 2023, 4:09 PM EDT

Good day, I am being invaded by what I think are carpet beetles. I am vacuuming frequently and squishing them as they appear, but I don't seem to make a dent in the numbers. Is there any nontoxic way to stop this infestation?

Hi Carol,

Apologies for the late reply, but I'm looking at this photo and it's difficult for me to confirm if these are carpet beetles. Carpet beetles and other fabric pests are attracted to animal fibers (wool, silk, etc) and in some cases, stored feed and/or grain. Dried pet food that are not properly sealed are attractive to carpet beetles. If you have any pets, their shed animal hair attract carpet beetles too.

I can suggest that you get your home professionally cleaned to remove any unseen pest eggs or larvae crawling around. It's not just the carpets and clothes where these beetles infest, they can travel around the home and hide inside crevices in your house. Dust, or lint, corners often hide these beetles as well. A licensed pest control company can do a thorough inspection and locate any sites of concern that are promoting these beetle populations. Just be sure to communicate that you want no pesticide treatments for this infestation. They should be able to recommend non-pesticide treatments to you after inspection.

Here is a really good publication that summarizes what I have stated: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/families-health/healthy-homes/finding-removing-variegated-carpet-beetles

Thank you for your patience!
