Lilac planting #841725

Asked July 20, 2023, 2:39 PM EDT

Hello, I have a bunch of lilac suckers that I dug up and have in containers growing happily. Should I transplant them into the ground this fall or wait till the spring? Also, if I have to overwinter them, do I keep them on top of the soil or take them into the soil? Thanks, Rebecca

Rebecca,

Thanks for your question.

Using suckers is a great way to propagate lilacs.  The only caveat is if the 'parent' bush is grafted, the suckers may not be the lilac but will reflect the root stock variety.  If you're not sure, you may be able to see a healed area near the ground on the main trunk.

I am assuming the suckers you have in pots are currently in soil so they should be putting out new roots.  You can go ahead and plant them this fall - water them in well and also provide extra water for the first year to help get them established (hoping next year is not as wet at this one!)

I'm attaching a nice 'how to grow lilacs' handout from Cornell Univ Extension that has additional information on choosing the best location, etc.

All the best with your new lilacs!
