Will coneflowers bloom if they are deadheaded and how do they spread?
Hi Nancy,
So many varieties of cone flowers! I have the purple ones and love them, especially the gold finches they attract in the fall.
Some gardeners deadhead to promote another flush of flowers in fall. Deadheading can reduce seed production.
Each bloom produces many seeds, some of which inevitably fall to the ground. Goldfinches in particular will land on dried seed heads and pick out seeds. During this process, seeds fall to the ground, and if not eaten by another bird or mouse, may germinate in the following Spring. Seeds need good soil and disturbed soil to create new plantain the spring. New plants show up every spring in my garden. Some are in surprising places and I transplant in early spring to put them where I want them.
Coneflowers often need to be divided every 3-4 years,
