Soil amendments for cucumbers #839733

Asked July 09, 2023, 12:33 PM EDT

My wife loves cucumbers, so I'm growing them for her in our yard. We have limited space, and they must go in the same spot next year. I've read that I shouldn't grow them in the same place from year to year. Is there something I can add to the soil so that they will do well in the same spot?

Hi John,

Thanks for contacting Ask Extension. You will want to clear all plant debris from previous growing seasons as this could harbor plant pests. Adding compost yearly, or before each crop if you plan to grow a second one should obviate poor growth in an area where cucumbers have been grown.  Make sure you manage any pest and disease issues.

July is a good time to plant the second crop! The link below provides details on growing this vegetable.  Because cucumbers require bees to pollinate flowers for fruit production planting flowers near them would be beneficial in attracting bees.

Dear Janet,

Thank you so much! I thought it would be more complicated. The link also is very helpful.
