Propagating lilacs from cuttings #836257

Asked June 18, 2023, 1:36 PM EDT

1)What is the best successful method to propagate lilac cuttings? In water with root hormone? 2) I have Hormex B1 liquid hormone, what concentration would you recommend? 3) Should I use softwood or hardwood cuttings?

Hello Rebecca,

I have attached an article on the propagation of deciduous trees and shrubs from softwood cuttings from Iowa State University.  The softwood cuttings are the way for you to go this time of year (May through early July) and this article will give you best methods for medium and technique.  Dipping the stems in full strength hormone for 1-5 minutes before planting is what is recommended in the article and on the website for Hormex (also attached). I've also attached an article specific to lilacs from the U. of Nebraska that would enlighten you.  Finally, a detailed article from NC State U. will give you everything else you need to know about propagation.

I wish you well in your project!
