Expert Response

Plant a Japanese tree on the north or east side of your house in a  protected location from winter cold and wind. You’ll need to apply a thick layer of mulch over the tree’s root zone.
Japanese maples grow best when planted in well-drained, acidic soil that is high in organic matter. Ideally, they should be placed in a spot with dappled shade. Japanese maple foliage is prone to leaf scorch in hot and dry locations in full sun. Mulching can help with this by keeping the roots cool and conserving soil moisture

You should also consider a Korean Maple. It is native to northeastern China, Korea, and the Russian.  'Korean Maple or Acer pseudosieboldianum  has slightly better winter hardiness  USGA hardiness zone 3 than most Japanese maples.
