Grass clippings as mulch #830764

Asked May 18, 2023, 2:37 PM EDT

Is it OK to use grass clippings around vegetable plants to keep the weeds down? Is there any downside to doing this like screwing up the soil?

Expert Response

Hi Mark, Thank you for the question. Mulch is very beneficial to a vegetable garden - reducing weeds, maintaining soil temperature, increasing water infiltration and reducing runoff, and as it breakdown adds nutrients to the soil. Yes, grass clippings are great for use as mulch.  They should be dried first. Apply no more than 2 inches at a time. Wet/green clippings can mat down and cause problems. I often apply a thin layer of green clippings at a time and they quickly dry out before clumping together.

However, if the lawn has been treated with weed killer, herbicide, for dandelions - don't use the clipping of mulch. If they have been treated, consult the label for further information.

Happy gardening!
