If you are overseeding a lawn, the ideal time to seed a is
early to mid-September. At this time of the year, the soil temperatures are still high, nighttime temperatures start to fall, and more heavy dews and rainfall is usually received. This combination makes almost perfect conditions for quick germination and establishment of turf from seed... But you can give it a try now, but this time of year irrigation becomes really critical. If the young grass seedling dries out, it is killed!
For tall fescue, the normal rate is 6 to 8 pounds per 1000 square feet for new plantings, so the overseeding rate would be 3 to 4 pounds per 1000 square feet. Fescue should germinate in about 10 days.
Water everything in and keep the seedbed moist but not sopping wet to ensure rapid germination. Keep irrigations light by using frequent applications of water and then progress to deeper, more infrequent watering as the seedlings become established.
