Do you have any recommendations on how to get this plant to flourish? It was reported about 2 years ago.

Expert Response

Your Schefflera looks very leggy.  I suspect it may have been overwatered  and does not get enough light.   Plants get strung out w/out sufficient light, and Schefflera needs a lot. Read more at https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/schefflera-arboricola/

When repotting, be sure the roots are somewhat crowded so the plant needs repotting.  And you should go to a pot that is only slightly larger than the one the plant is in because otherwise the root system is undersized for the pot.  Additionally, water only once dry.

Your plant will probably not grow into an attractive plant.  I suggest you start over w/ a new plant and give it plenty of light.   If you do not have sufficient light, choose a plant that does well in low light conditions.

NCSU has a plant finder option.  I put in low light houseplant, https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/find_a_plant/?light__id=4&landscape_location__id=3. It suggests a number of outdoor and indoor plants.  You can also read tags on plants at a nursery or shop and look for plants that do not require good light.  Also, rotate your plant so leaves do not all lean in the same direction.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the fast and detailed response!

This plant has sentimental value, so I hope to save it if at all possible.

I will, however, also look to obtain a newer plant and do a better job with lightening, now that we have settled in.

Again, thanks so much for your detailed response with helpful links/suggestions.

I wondered if it had sentimental value.  Hope you can help it.   Carefully take it out of the pot and fit it into a smaller pot where there’s not too much soil.  In a while, fertilize w/ a weak solution.
