How to remove Linden viburnum #822336

Asked March 13, 2023, 4:15 PM EDT

I have numerous bushes of Lindum viburnum growing in our woods (some are 10-15' high). My property is adjacent to the Liberty Watershed so I am trying to prevent it from growing there. I have had an arborist and others come in to try and remove both the viburnum and Japanese barberry.

Hi,

Yes they can be tenacious. Just repeated cutting down until the roots are exhausted and or combining the cutting with application of systemic herbicide use on the cuts are the practical way to remove them. You may have to be persistent, especially with cutting them if you choose not to use chemicals, as they will continue to grow back until the root supply is gone.

Systemic herbicide like glyphosate (Roundup or other commercial brands) carefully applied to the root cuts and stems stays (mostly) contained in the root system and quickly breaks down in the soil afterwards, so it is a viable option to combat unwanted and certain invasive plants.
