what is the best way to thin a giant connifer so it handles wind better? #822157

Asked March 10, 2023, 6:22 PM EST

I always thought that we "window" a tree to provide wind to go through the branches and reduce the "sail" of the tree. I just heard someone tell me that is old thinking and results in more breakage. I hear now they just reduce the wider branches by 4-6 feet. which creates a safer tree? I have a lot of them near my house. i am actually just north of Seattle.

Hello Bev,

Unfortunately, we don't take out-of-state questions due to the conditions and climates varying so much. Washington State University has an Extension program, and you can contact the Kings County Extension office with your question. I recommend reaching out to their Master Gardener program at <personal data hidden> or <personal data hidden>.
