Squirrels and my garden #820082

Asked February 10, 2023, 11:45 AM EST

I want to fence in our small (16'x16') raised bed (with netting roof) garden against squirrels. I've used galvanized 1/2"x1/2" for the lower part of the walls, but I tried bird netting for the top part of the wall and the roof, and the squirrels have torn that apart. I'd like to buy some galvanized welded-wire fencing. I have read various advice on the internet. Do I need 14 gauge or 16 gauge? Do I need 3/4x3/4" or 1x1" mesh opening? Thanks very much! Bob

Squirrel interest can make for rough going.
You are on the right track.
If using mesh or welded wire fencing, 1/2 in. openings or less are recommended. Hardware cloth would be a good choice.
Both 14 or 16 gauge wire are ok.
