Arborvitae dead foliage in the interior of trees #814288

I have planted an arborvitae hedge in May of this year. Plants appear healthy except recently some foliage in interior of plants has died. Is this seasonal replacement of foliage for these conifers? If it is should it be removed? I also have established arborvitae that have accumulated shed foliage all along the trunk. Should this dead material be removed? Thanks Jim Buchanan

Expert Response
It is normal for evergreens like arborvitae to experience a seasonal needle drop in the older parts (center). Drought stress and/or disease can also cause greater than normal loss. Healthy evergreens should be be green on outer growth. With our extended dry weather, ensure these evergreens receive water on a regular basis. You can remove any dead branches /twigs. This would help ensure better air circulation and susceptibility to fungal disease. Start from the ends and remove until you reach green wood.
