Mosquito season #809119

Asked September 01, 2022, 6:22 PM EDT

I’d like to start walking in the evening again. So are mosquitos gone or still around? What is considered mosquito season? Are we ever free of them?

Expert Response

Hi - Mosquitoes are still active now and in the fall while the weather is warm. They become inactive when the temperature is consistently 50F degrees or lower. You can protect yourself from bites by wearing repellants and/or long-sleeved shirts and pants that they cannot bite into. Repellants with the active ingredients
DEET, picaridin, Icaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective to deter mosquitoes from biting. Lightweight clothing treated with the insecticide permethrin also works well. If you are sitting outdoors, place a fan near you -- the wind breezes will help keep mosquitoes away.
