How do I collect and prepare Magnolia tree seeds for planting and when and how do I plant them.
I'm also collecting acorns, hickory nutsand walnuts for planting. I've found some data on these but am finding nothing on magnolias.
Can you send or e-mail me any literature on these procedures?

Magnolia seeds tend to require moist stratification, meaning that not only do they need the chilling period to mimic winter (stratification), but they cannot desiccate during this period. Pawpaw and several other native tree and shrub species have similar requirements. This could be as simple as keeping the cleaned seeds, free of berry pulp, in the 'fridge with a slightly-moist paper towel or vermiculite, but you could experiment with direct-sowing them as well, or potting them up outside with protection from animal predation (like from mice).
William Cullina's book Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines provides propagation tips for each genus he discusses in the appendices, including Magnolia. The arboretum of Swarthmore College has a brief article about Magnolia seed harvesting and storage, as do a few other Extension web sites (like this one for Cucumbertree Magnolia), though the information isn't extensive. One resource for Southern Magnolia mentions a quarter-inch planting depth (plus a light mulch over top of that), but we don't have enough data to say if that applies to all Magnolia species or how sensitive the seeds are to exact planting depth.
I'm hoping you can also help me identify my hickory trees.
I have two trees on my property I want to plant seeds from. I can't determine the type of hickory tree. The two are different and are in Baltimore, Maryland. I thought the one was shagbark, because the thick husks come off easily, leaves are groups of 7, but the tree bark is not correct. The other tree has small nuts which don't let the husk come off, leaves are groups of 5
I have attached two pictures of nuts from the two trees, which I hope allow you to Identify my tree types.
