What is this tree/ shrub, & are the berries edible?

Hi Richard, 

This looks like a shrub known commonly as Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata). It is considered an invasive species in Maryland. Because of its aggressive growth habit, it out-competes native plants, creating dense shade, and disrupting plant succession and nutrient-cycling.

The berries of Autumn Olive are edible (here's a recipe from Maryland DNR for Autumn Olive Jam!) however, we do not recommend consuming berries from wild plants unless you are positive on their identification and you are sure the plants have not been sprayed with any chemicals.
