Pine needles as mulch #806064

Asked August 13, 2022, 12:25 PM EDT

Hello, I have pine trees in my yard that drop a lot of pine needles. I am wondering if I can use the raked pine needles as an alternative to buying mulch to put in around trees and plants next to my house. Is it flammable and safe next to my home?

A benefit of pine mulch is that it is a FREE (in your case) organic mulch that will help break down the soil. The needles break down slowly, so you use about and inch to an inch and a half each year. As it decomposes, it increases the soil porosity allowing water and oxygen to reach the roots, and doesn’t blow away.  Dry pine needles are flammable (Oregon State Extension does not recommend leaving them on the ground if you are in a wildfire prone area) so that is something to consider when using near your home.  Here are some Extension publications that talk about using pine needles as mulch.
