Sparkling water for plants| #801696

Asked July 17, 2022, 9:52 PM EDT

I sometimes pour a little bit of (unflavored) sparkling water in our indoor plant pots instead of emptying it out in the sink before recycling the bottle. My partner and I were wondering whether or not this has a beneficial effect on the plants. Regardless of the quantity of sparkling water or the overall watering needs of the plants, would carbonated water have an overall net beneficial effect on the plants?

Expert Response

Sparkling water is just water with carbon dioxide added under pressure.  This would not be harmful or helpful to plants.  However some sparkling water has calcium, magnesium and sodium added.  So it depends on what is in your sparkling water.  Calcium and magnesium would be okay. Sodium could be harmful depending on the amount.
