Black Knot disease #801632

Asked July 17, 2022, 3:01 PM EDT

I have a Canadian ornamental cherry tree that is infected pretty bad with black knot . I am going to cut it down. My question is can I cut it down now or do I have not o wait till it goes dormant? It is the only tree like it that I have only other are spruce and a Red Maple. Would it spread to that? Thank you for your help.

Expert Response

Black knot fungal disease primarily affect plum and some cherry trees so your Spruce and Red Maple should be fine.  There is no need to wait to cut it down if that is your decision.  You may already be aware of how this fungus spreads, but just in case, I am including a link to an article that provides that information.  Hope that helps.

Thank you Diane for the info. One final question, can I replant a say,  red maple or a flowering crab tree where the infected tree was? If so are there any special precautions?? Thanks again Don.

Yes you can replant in the same area as long as the tree is not a plum or cherry.  Because the fungal spores reside in the branches it would be best to clean up the area well after tree removal.  Best of luck!
