What is causing my red pines to turn brown #798228

Asked June 28, 2022, 7:54 AM EDT

I received 25 red pine seedlings thru Anoka county tree sales and about half of them are turning brown . I live in East Bethel, so very sandy, they are on my property line so get watered everyday from my sprinklers and my neighbors sprinklers also. The soil is plenty moist. It is random which ones are turning brown. It is well watered with high iron if that makes a difference. Are they dying or just in shock? Thank You!

Expert Response

When did you receive and plant the seedlings?  Have you noticed any insects on them?  Did they appear to be green and healthy when you planted them?

I received the trees April 29th 2022, I planted them the same day. They were very healthy when I planted them. They slowly have been turning more and more brown since around mid May . I haven’t noticed any insects on them.

There are a number of conditions that can cause your seedlings to die.  The University of Minnesota Extension group has prepared a worksheet outlining the various causes; it includes photos.  Please look at your seedlings in light of this worksheet, and you will likely find the cause of their browning.
