Kohlrabi has bolted #794659

Asked June 07, 2022, 10:33 AM EDT

Hi - I planted some Early White Vienna kohlrabi plants (not seeds) in a galvanized tub on May 7. First time planting kohlrabi. Thought they were doing well, but realized this past weekend they are starting to flower (flowers not open yet), found out after searching google that they likely bolted due to cold weather. Bulbs are very small at the base, if there at all. If we cut off the flowers, will the bulb still grow? Or should we just let them flower so our bees can enjoy them? (We have eaten some of the leaves, not bad!) Thanks! Cindy

Expert Response

Kohlrabi grows best in cool temperatures between 40°F and 75F. Kohlrabi requires 45 to 60 days to reach maturity. Keep the soil around your kohlrabi plants moist and nutrient rich. They prefer a well-draining soil with a pH range of about 6.0 to 6.9. Kohlrabi that goes without water will become woody. If the plants experience late spring frosts, or more than a week of nights below 50°F, they may bolt (produce a flowering stalk and stop growing) once warm weather returns. Plant that bolt are too bitter, since they have flower buds.  Avoid planting after May 1. The high temperatures will not produce good quality. You can replant in late summer or early fall. They tolerate light frost when seeded in fall.
