How do I plant and care for peony bulbs? Especially distance from bulbs, soil conditions & watering?

A big hole with organic material mixed in fosters growth. Planting depth is important for flowering to occur. Once my peonies started blooming I've ignored them, except to cut the spent blooms, clean up the foliage in the fall and occasionally reduce the size of the tubers.
