Is it a good idea to add used grounds to soil? And under what situations is it beneficial? Is there a trusted resource for learning about safe ways to use it? The Internet advice is all over the range of good vs bad.

Coffee grounds are a great source of organic material for the compost pile. Caffeine in the grounds may deter slugs from your hosta. Spread the grounds about an inch deep around individual plants. Research has demonstrated that coffee grounds have an inhibitory effect on seed germination when used as topdressing.
